This summer 2022, the Château de Belœil is hosting a unique collection in Europe of authentic costumes from the great Samba schools of Rio de Janeiro. The exhibition “The Fabulous Carnival of Rio” is visible from July 2 to August 31. It is scenographed by the Belgian and passionate Alain Taillard, who participated several years in a row in the Carnival, within the most prestigious schools of Samba. On the program: the presentation of more than 30 authentic costumes from the great samba schools of Rio de Janeiro, including 10 exclusive, never seen before. An exceptional work, made by hand and which can be admired very closely: richness of colors, fabrics, embroidery, stones, feathers, rhinestones…

Fashion and the Art of the Show come together. A party not to be missed! The creativity of the sewing workshopsCostume making can be compared to haute couture. Certain rules must be respected: fidelity of the costumes to the theme of the samba, originality, creativity, style, impact of colors, harmony, richness, finish, materials used, embroidery, uniformity of details…

The costumes on display were worn by three types of dancers:- The passitas: talented samba dancers.- Bahian women: mothers, grandmothers and great-grandmothers wear this traditional dress. They turn on themselves throughout the course, according to a synchronized choreography, a fundamental imposed figure of the parade.- The destaques: the schools highlight certain people called “destaques”. They allow them to parade in their luxury costumes, comparable to haute couture, richly adorned with stones and feathers. These costumes are unique. They are created for the occasion, respecting the theme of the school.

Experience the magic of this popular eventThe Parade of Samba Schools is the largest contest held in Brazil. Everything is taken into account: the beauty of the floats, the enthusiasm of the participants, the harmony between the participants, the contagious joy, the beauty, the richness of the parade, its cohesion, its colors, its details, the general harmony , the originality of the theme of the samba and its music, the quality of the songs, the mastery of the percussions, the professionalism all in joy which must put the public in a state of general madness.

All the costumes presented in this exhibition paraded only once in the biggest parade of the samba schools of the 1st division of Rio. All this for a maximum of 72 minutes. These costumes are therefore ephemeral. The exhibition The Fabulous Costume of Rio allows them to have a second life. This contrast of the ephemeral of a show with the historical furniture of the Château de Beloeil also gives all the richness to the event. Costumes to admire in every detailThese extraordinary costumes are present on mannequins with a special staging, bringing together sound and light games to immerse the visitor in the effervescence of the Rio Carnival and discover its secrets. The exhibition is punctuated by an educational trail explaining the different components of the Rio Carnival and the phases of the parade in the sambadrome. On the menu: videos and photos from behind the scenes of the parade, explanatory texts, original sketches given to the sewing workshops so that they can make the desired costumes.Visitors to the exhibition approach the costumes very closely. The opportunity to appreciate the work done by hand on each costume, the richness of the fabrics and accessories that compose it (embroidery, stone, ostrich feather, pheasant, rhinestones…). A delight for fashion lovers.

A country dear to the family of the Princes of LigneIf the Château de Beloeil has agreed to host this exhibition, it is not by chance. Princess de Ligne was born Eléonore of Orléans and Braganza, Princess of Brazil. She is a direct descendant of the last Emperor of Brazil and grew up in Rio de Janeiro. In 1981, she married Prince Michel de Ligne in Rio de Janeiro and then moved to Belgium. Known throughout Europe for her elegance and her smile, she brought the joy and warmth of Brazil to Beloeil. “Brazil – and Belgium too for that matter – is a country of hearts and joys, confides the Princess of Brazil, HRH the Princess of Ligne. The Carnival is a fantastic representation of it, which has always enchanted young and old. J I have often attended this “greatest show in the world” and admired the dances. Being able to see these costumes up close and relive this celebration is a chance. Hosting this exhibition in Beloeil is moving, I am proud that my country of origin make my country vibrate with life all summer long.” At the origin of the exhibition, a carnival enthusiastThis exhibition presents a unique collection in Europe, which is the fruit of several years of participation of the Belgian Alain Taillard within the most prestigious schools of Samba. Since his childhood, Alain Taillard has been cradled by his parents in the carnivalesque atmosphere of the German-speaking community of Belgium. Since 1992, he has been going to the carnival in Rio every year. First as a spectator, then, a few years later, to march among the samba schools in the famous Sambadrome. This former SNCB employee, recognized as the specialist and ambassador of the Rio Carnival in Belgium, is one of the very few Europeans to have the privilege of being part of the very closed circle of Rio destaques, particularly in the school of Mangueira samba, the most popular in Brazil.
