Muscat – Six students from Oman are undergoing rigorous training to compete in International Mathematical Olympiad 2022 to be held in Norway from July 6 to July 16. The Ministry of Education, represented by the Department of Innovation and Scientific Olympiad, is overseeing the preparation of the Omani students to take part in the 63rd edition of International Mathematical Olympiad. On the significance of the Omani students’ participation in the competition and the training provided to them, Ma’en al Hinai, Senior Scientific Olympiad Specialist in MoE, said, “The ministry’s task was to find students who are good at mathematics, select the best and hone their skills through training in four areas in mathematics – algebra, geometry, number theory and combinations.”

Selection of the students was done in three stages. The first involved nomination of students who are good at mathematics from educational directorates in the different governorates. In the second stage, the ministry implemented a training programme – virtually – with more than 30 students. “In cooperation with a group of experts in teaching mathematics, and with the aim of selecting the national team to participate in the global scientific forum, the third and final stage was the establishment of an intensive training camp in which six students are being trained during mornings and evenings on the four areas for a full week, ten hours per day,” said Hinai. Dr Mahmoud bin Muhammad al Hashami, mathematics teacher from Mazen bin Ghadouba School in Dakhliyah and camp trainer, said, “These students are among the best in mathematics in Oman.
